  7.     Most of use a cache. No matter how fast our systems or drives, we
  8.     strive for that little more. CD ROM drives had a slow access time.
  9.     This is constantly being improved. My first CD ROM had an access of
  10.     over 600ms. Today my drive is 350ms. The cache programs that we use
  11.     do NOT support a CD drive. CD Speedway does. CD Speedway, is a
  12.     software package that is a cache for your CD drive.
  13.  
  14.     The program comes packaged with both 5.25" and 3.5" disks. Just run
  15.     the INSTALL program to get up and running quickly. Once you complete
  16.     this, you must set up a configuration file for the program. This is
  17.     done by typing: SPEED WAY, in that directory. You supply the answers
  18.     to several questions about: size of cache, location of cache and so
  19.     on. The manual explains, and can take you through each step. You
  20.     then save the file and you are done.

  22.     CD Speedway will work with any CD-ROM reader, uses only 19K RAM, and
  23.     can be loaded into high memory. It accepts any vaild DOS device to
  24.     be used as a cache. If the device has a drive letter CD Speedway can
  25.     use it.

  27.     I ran the program against several CDs. Many portions of the programs
  28.     that I accessed did move faster than before. Some portions developed
  29.     a slight hesitation. I did find however, that optimum performance,
  30.     is achieved if you use a RAM DISK, as the cache device. I tried it
  31.     on my hard drive with a 19ms access, and on a RAM DISK. The RAM DISK
  32.     caused the above problems to vanish. My RAM DISK had a cache size of
  33.     3meg. You do not need that much, as even 1 meg. should suffice. If
  34.     you do have the memory, and need to use your hard drive, you may be
  35.     disappointed. It will still function passably, but may not live up
  36.     to your expectations.

  39.     at Egghead for less than the list price.
